With time it gets absorbed in everyday life. And what is familiar, is safe. It is not merely a clever marketing. It’s human nature.

Consider the last gift or item you retained as a result of something or a donation. Chances are, it felt personal. It was printed on perhaps, your name. Perhaps it made allusion to your town. Perhaps it was just that the design suited you. It is then that the message hearsay changes to look at us to we see you. An adjustment, however, fine, still.

Human beings are attracted to what they are all about. Colors resonate. Words carry weight. Fit matters. A product that fits within daily routine is retained. In the event of it not, it is clutter. It is not hard to push aside a random logo that is affixed to something impractical. But a truly useful object will create the loyalty without ever requesting any.

Durability is essential. Disposable products do not easily gain long-term love. A netbook that can survive in everyday life. A shirt that does not lose its shape and color with repeated washing. When a product works, so does a connection associated with it. When it is not effective, the disappointment is no less powerful.

Timing plays its part as well. The best gifts are usually one that is presented on special occasions – first days, milestones, silent displays of gratitude. Unless people memorize the reasons as to why they have been given something, they will recall the feelings that it gave them. A free gift, which has no marked agenda attached to it, is accepted differently.

Humor, which is natural, increases the impact. A clever phrase. A light joke. Something that makes one smile or comment. A logo cannot spread as fast as word of mouth. The product does nothing but open the door.

Information and statistics are useful in making decisions, yet there should be a part of intuition. It is usually the case that being too safe results in the totally unmemorable. In some cases the somewhat odd decision turns out to be the favorite one. Similar to trying something new and asking yourself why you did not do it before.

Luxury is not needed to be personalized. It requires attention. A person even taking time to fantasize what the other person may be going through in the day–what she grabs without thought, what she carries with her, what can cheer her a dull afternoon up.
